The Comandante® C60 Baracuda® is a robust, high-performance manual coffee grinder with the biggest and most advanced burr set design Comandante ever released.

Description -

For burrs, bigger is not normally better. Comandante was still curious how large a burr set could fit into a familiar, manageable manual grinder format, aiming for higher productivity at the same grind quality. The BARACUDA® burr set led them to a new grinder body with a solid chassis. The unibody construction is milled and formed from a single block of steel, built for stability and efficient power transfer. At filter coffee grind settings, Comandante states that the C60 grinds well over a gram per second.

Making a unibody out of steel is demanding. Comandante uses manufacturing processes normally reserved for high-performance motor parts. The Nautilus Blue colour comes from a durable powder coating. The design is clear-cut and follows its function. At around one kilogram, the C60 is a heavy grinder that sits steady in the hand while you crank.

Comandante C60 in use while grinding

When is the larger hand grinder worth it?

A larger hand grinder pays off once the amount per session goes up. What matters is the time at the crank: a larger burr set has more cutting surface and processes more beans per turn. At a brew ratio of 1:15, a large cup of filter coffee takes around 15 g of beans, two cups around 30 g and a carafe for four people around 60 g. If you mostly grind a single cup, you will hardly notice the difference. If you grind for several people every day, you save time with every session. The trade-off is weight and size, because a large hand grinder belongs on the counter rather than in a travel bag. The Comandante C60 is built for exactly this use. Its Baracuda® burr set sits in a unibody milled from a single block of steel. According to Comandante, it grinds well over a gram per second at filter grind settings. It weighs around one kilogram and is made in Germany.

For pour over you grind medium-fine. The Brew Lab converts its recommended grind size into clicks for your Comandante. For two cups, brew in the Graycano Dripper with the matching Filter GC01 and serve from the Pourcano.

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed threshold, it is a question of time at the crank. At a brew ratio of 1:15, a large cup takes around 15 g of beans and two cups around 30 g. If you regularly grind two cups or more per session, you benefit from the larger Baracuda® burr set of the C60, which according to Comandante grinds well over a gram per second at filter grind. For a single cup the grinding time is short anyway, so there is little reason for the C60 at around one kilogram. If you also want to take the grinder with you, look at the C40 or the X25 Trailmaster instead.

Both work, it depends on your priorities. An electric grinder does the work for you and is faster with large amounts, but it needs power and a fixed spot on the counter. A hand grinder is quiet, needs no power and works anywhere. With the C60 the effort stays manageable even for several cups: according to Comandante it grinds well over a gram per second at filter grind, so 30 g for two cups take less than half a minute. If you need several carafes for many people every day, an electric grinder is the better choice.
