What is a cork sleeve on a dripper for?

A cork sleeve does two jobs: it protects your hand, and it secures your grip. A metal dripper takes on the temperature of the brew, and it does so within the first few seconds. Without a sleeve you either leave it alone after brewing or reach for a cloth, and a cloth slips. Cork conducts heat poorly, so its surface stays comfortable to hold while the metal underneath is hot. It is water resistant and takes up no moisture on brief contact, which makes it forgiving next to a brew. There is a second effect that usually shows up only in use: the sleeve cushions the dripper when you set it down on glass and keeps it from sliding on the rim of a server. The Graycano Sleeve is made from natural cork, the material comes from Portugal, and it is manufactured in Germany. It is water resistant and hypoallergenic.

Frequently asked questions

The difference is the retaining band. The Sleeve is pure natural cork and holds on through its fit alone. The Sleeve Pro adds an integrated silicone band that keeps it in place even when the dripper is set down and picked up repeatedly. Both are natural cork and both protect your hand equally well. If you take the sleeve off often or use the dripper on the move, go for the Pro. If you fit it once and leave it there, you do not need the band.

On the raw material there is a good case for cork: it is stripped from the bark of the cork oak, the tree stays standing and grows the bark back. Silicone, on the other hand, is very durable and heat resistant, and a long service life is an environmental argument in its own right. A full life cycle assessment depends on transport, manufacturing and how long the individual piece lasts, and we cannot document that properly here. So we state only what is on record: our Sleeve is made from natural cork from Portugal and manufactured in Germany.
