What does a flat bottom change compared to a cone filter?

A flat bottom spreads the coffee bed into a layer of even depth, while a cone tapers towards the bottom. Everything else follows from that geometry. In a flat bed there is roughly the same amount of coffee across the whole surface, every particle spends a similar time in contact with water, and the result reads as more balanced. Uneven pouring shows up less. In a cone the bed gathers towards the tip, so water passes through a deeper layer in the middle. That emphasises clarity and individual notes, but it reacts more sharply to grind size and pouring pace. The filter matters in practice: a flat bottom needs flat bottom filters, a cone needs cone filters, and the two are not interchangeable. The Graycano Coin is an insert made from food-safe premium silicone with seven outlet holes. It docks into the Lava Ribs of the Graycano Dripper and switches it to flat bottom filters for one to two cups.

The table puts the Graycano Dripper with the Coin fitted next to the same dripper without it. The comparison covers what the shape does to the coffee bed.

Frequently asked questions

The difference comes from contact time in the bed, not from the material. In a cone the bed runs together towards the tip, the coffee sits deeper in the middle, and water takes longer to pass through there, while the edges rinse through faster. On a flat bottom the layer is about the same depth everywhere, so contact times sit closer together and the result comes out more even. Which of the two shapes you prefer depends on the coffee and on your own taste. The Coin makes the switch possible, so you do not have to settle on one.

A second dripper is not needed. The Graycano Coin docks into the Lava Ribs of the Graycano Dripper you already own and turns it into a flat bottom brewer. Seven outlet holes carry the water away underneath. What you do need is the matching filter: with the Coin you brew on flat bottom filters, without it on size 1 cone filters. The insert comes out again at any time, so the same dripper stays usable for both shapes.
