Espresso is a small, very hot serving, and small servings cool down fast. In a thin-walled cup the heat travels out through the wall quickly, and at 30 to 60 ml of content you notice that within a few minutes. Porcelain has thicker walls and buffers exactly that. Preheating belongs to the picture though: a cold cup draws heat out of the shot as it runs in, and the thicker the wall, the more it draws. This is why the cup gets rinsed with hot water or warmed on top of the machine. The second reason is the surface.
