Filter coffee - from the beginnings to today

The history of filter coffee is a fascinating journey that begins in the 18th century when people started to make coffee using simple filtering methods. These early filters were often made from fabrics such as burlap to separate the grounds from the liquid and produce a clearer coffee. A major turning point in the history of filter coffee came in 1908, when German housewife Melitta Bentz invented the first paper coffee filter. Melitta Bentz was unhappy with the coffee grounds in her coffee and experimented with blotting paper to create a better filter. Her invention proved so successful that she received a patent for it in the same year. In the 20th century, the use of paper filters and filter coffee machines spread rapidly. Particularly after the Second World War, filter coffee machines became increasingly popular as they offered a simple and convenient way of brewing large quantities of coffee. In the 1950s and 1960s, the first automatic filter coffee machines came onto the market. Development continued to progress, the machines were improved and filter coffee never went out of fashion, even in the age of fully automatic coffee machines.
